Bathroom Renovations in Raceview
The racecourse that moved
Raceview takes its name from an early racecourse at the end of Grange Road, later relocated to Bundamba. In 1828, during the convict era, there was a farm here called Plough Station. The Cunningham Highway clips the suburb's south-eastern corner. The 2021 census counted 9,699 residents. Raceview Provisional School opened on 20 August 1901 and became a state school on 1 January 1909.
American war graves
During the Second World War, American service members who died in or near Australia were buried in an extension of the Ipswich General Cemetery. Mrs Rose Manson of Salisbury Street laid flowers every Sunday, wrote to relatives in the United States and received seeds from their gardens. In 1947 the remains of 1,397 men were exhumed and returned home. Manson Park is named in her honour.
A hall and a drive-in
Raceview Public Hall was set up in August 1947 on a site north of the state school by moving the former Glenville Hall from Booval. In May 1959 the Starline Drive-In opened on Cascade Street, holding 300 cars. It later gained a second screen and closed in 1996. These landmarks show a suburb that grew in the middle of the twentieth century.
Mid-century houses
A suburb whose school opened in 1901 and whose drive-in opened in 1959 is likely to contain houses from the postwar decades. Bathrooms of that age often have small footprints and older pipework. Tell each business when your house was built, and ask how they would handle a floor that has been repaired in the past.
Asbestos questions
Queensland Government guidance says asbestos was widely used in houses built before 1990 and is generally not harmful if left undisturbed. A mid-century bathroom may have asbestos-containing wall sheeting. Ask each renovator how they would test material before demolition, and read the official page, which is the authority on handling and disposal.
A labour-hire price guide
The guide behind these notes gives tiers by room size and finish, from a cosmetic refresh at $5,000 to $12,000 through to $45,000 to $80,000 or more for a reconfigured premium bathroom. It warns that the rate per square metre climbs as the room shrinks. None of these is a Raceview price.
Who does what
Building above $3,300 and plumbing at any value need a QBCC licence in Queensland. Ask who will do the tiling and waterproofing, who will do the plumbing, and who will be on site when the business is absent. Request licence numbers, look them up, and keep the record.
Wartime graves
Raceview State School took that name on 1 January 1909. During the Second World War, American service members who died in or near Australia were buried in a 6.5 acre extension of Ipswich General Cemetery until they could be returned home. A neighbour, Mrs Rose Manson, laid flowers on the graves each Sunday and wrote to relatives in the United States.
Plough Station and the wartime cemetery
Wikipedia says that in 1828, in the convict era, a farm called Plough Station stood here, and the suburb takes its name from an early racecourse at the end of Grange Road. During the Second World War, American service personnel who died in or near Australia were buried temporarily in an extension of Ipswich General Cemetery, and local resident Rose Manson tended the graves. Bethany Lutheran Primary School opened in 1982.
