Bathroom Renovations in Bundamba

Hills, creeks and a racecourse

Bundamba is bounded in part by the Bremer River and Bundamba Creek, and has two hills, Bergins Hill at 84 metres and Station Hill at 59 metres, each the focus of a neighbourhood. It combines residential and industrial areas, with shops along Brisbane Road and grazing near the river in the north. Ipswich Racecourse is in the south-west at 219 Brisbane Road. The 2021 census counted 6,542 residents.

Place of the stone axe

The name comes from an Ugarapul word meaning place of the stone axe. It was first written Bundumba, then Bundanba, and on 30 January 1932 the spelling Bundamba was officially fixed. The name Bergins may refer to Denis Bergin, the publican of the Prince Alfred Hotel and a prospector after whom a coal seam is named, or to Thomas Bergin, a bailiff.

Coal and a loop line

From the 1880s the Redbank-Bundamba Loop Line was built in stages to serve sidings at local coal mines. The Main Line railway runs just north of Brisbane Road, and Bundamba station serves the suburb, with the Swanbank line splitting off to the power station. Coal mining shaped this area and its housing, which may include older worker housing and later infill.

Old schools

A Primitive Methodist church opened on 31 July 1865 in Mr Seymour's paddock. Bundamba Lower State School opened on 7 February 1873 and was renamed Bundamba State School in 1913, while Bundamba Upper State School opened on 2 February 1874, was renamed Ripley State School in 1909 and closed in 1930 for lack of students.

Industrial neighbours

Industry shares the suburb with homes, so heavy vehicles may use some streets. Ask each business how it will arrange deliveries on your street and whether it plans to start early. A quiet word with neighbours before the work begins is courteous and usually appreciated, and it makes the days of noise easier to accept.

Cost bands

A labour-hire price guide quotes $3,000 to $7,000 per square metre nationally. It assumes the room is structurally sound and that a licensed builder or bathroom company runs the job. It sets a cosmetic refresh at $5,000 to $12,000 and a premium reconfigured bathroom at $45,000 to $80,000 or more. Ipswich prices can differ from those national ranges.

Reading the paperwork

The QBCC's pages on contract types say what a contract must include depends on the value of the work. Ask for payments in stages, keep variations in writing, and check licence numbers. The QBCC licence is required for building above $3,300 and for plumbing at any value.

Rivers, creeks and roads

The Bremer River forms the western part of Bundamba's northern boundary, and Bundamba Creek mostly bounds the west before joining the Bremer at the north-western corner. The Warrego Highway skirts the north-eastern edge, Brisbane Road crosses from Ebbw Vale to Booval, and the Main Line railway runs just north of that road.
