Bathroom Renovations in Booval
Residential and commercial, on Brisbane Road
Booval straddles Brisbane Road, the main arterial link to the Ipswich Motorway, and contains both homes and shops. Booval Fair shopping centre houses chain stores such as Woolworths and Big W, and smaller businesses line South Station Road and Brisbane Road. The 2021 census counted 2,723 residents, which makes it one of the smaller suburbs on this list.
Named for a frilled lizard
Wikipedia says the name comes from the Ugarapul word for frilled lizard. The first large-scale cotton crops in Queensland were grown at Booval in the 1860s, and the settlement grew out of a private estate and its place on the road and railway between Ipswich and Brisbane. These details point to a suburb that was a transport stop before it was a dormitory.
A church on the move
In December 1895 the Anglican diocese called for tenders for the Church of All Saints on land given by Miss Ferrett and Harry Ferrett, and it was dedicated on 16 May 1896. In 1913 the building was rolled on beer barrels to Silkstone, and in 1930 carried on a flat-top lorry to its present site in Booval. A church hall opened on 10 May 1930, and a second church was dedicated in 1983.
Break-away Methodists
Booval Primitive Methodist Church opened on 16 May 1900, formed by believers who opposed uniting all Methodists. About November 1905 the congregation sold the building to the Congregational Church, which held its opening services on 26 November 1905. The building at 148 Brisbane Road was sold in December 1969 so the congregation could build elsewhere. It is a long record of changing hands.
Smaller blocks, mixed uses
Because Booval mixes homes with roadside shops, some houses sit close to busier streets, where noise and vehicle dust can be a bigger part of daily life. If your house is near Brisbane Road, ask each renovator how they would manage dust and deliveries, and whether windows and ventilation are part of the plan.
Cost guide, in plain terms
A labour-hire guide says a cosmetic refresh can cost $5,000 to $12,000 nationally, while a reconfigured premium bathroom can reach $45,000 to $80,000 or more. It assumes a licensed builder runs the job, the room is structurally sound and prices include GST. If your bathroom is not sound, ask how the business would price the repair.
Checks before you sign
The QBCC requires a licence for building work above $3,300 and for any plumbing and drainage, and its register is open to the public. Electrical licences are checked at the Electrical Safety Office. Find each person on the list, write down the numbers and date, and keep the notes with your contract.
A frilled lizard and a church
Booval takes its name from an Ugarapul word for the frilled lizard. The suburb mixes homes with shops, and Booval Fair on Brisbane Road holds Woolworths and Big W. Bishop William Webber laid the foundation stone of All Saints church on 24 January 1896 and dedicated it on 16 May 1896, when the area was still called Bundanba.
